Why Anger Is Part of Your Healing Journey (And How to Release It)

Have you ever felt your chest tighten, your fists clench, or your jaw lock in frustration? Maybe you’ve swallowed your anger, trying to “keep the peace,” only to feel it show up later as anxiety, digestive issues, or exhaustion.

For Black women over 40, this experience is far too common. We've been conditioned to silence our anger—told that expressing it makes us “difficult,” “too much,” or worse, the infamous “angry Black woman.”

But here’s the truth: Suppressing anger doesn’t make it disappear—it makes it linger in your body. Research shows that unresolved anger is linked to increased inflammation, heart disease, and chronic stress.

➡️ According to a Journal of Behavioral Medicine study, individuals who suppress anger are three times more likely to develop cardiovascular issues.

➡️ The American Psychological Association reports that unexpressed anger is a key contributor to chronic pain, migraines, and digestive disorders—common concerns for Black women navigating menopause, anxiety, or autoimmune conditions.

The truth is, anger is not your enemy—it’s a signal. And ignoring it keeps your nervous system stuck in survival mode.

I know this firsthand.

For years, I believed that “being strong” meant hiding my anger—softening my words, shrinking myself, and staying silent. I became a master at pushing my feelings down to avoid being seen as aggressive or unkind. But instead of finding peace, I found myself battling anxiety, overwhelm, and constant tension in my body.

That’s because anger—when unprocessed—doesn’t just disappear. It festers. It lingers in your chest, your stomach, your shoulders… and yes, even your feet.

I’ve worked with countless women who carry this tension unknowingly — women who feel “stuck,” fatigued, or disconnected without realizing their unspoken anger is living in their muscles, their breath, and their energy.

But here’s the powerful truth:

Your body is your greatest ally.  It knows how to release these emotions—but you must give it permission.

That’s why I created the Body Flow Method—a gentle yet powerful movement practice designed to help you:

✅ Release trapped emotions like anger, resentment, and frustration.

✅ Regulate your nervous system so you feel calm and grounded.

✅ Build emotional resilience so you can express yourself freely—without guilt or shame.

In my practice, I teach simple yet powerful somatic movement techniques that allow your body to process and release anger in a healthy, restorative way.

Here are 3 Body Flow Techniques you can try today:

1️⃣ Stomp it Out (Grounding Practice)

➡️ Stand barefoot with your feet firmly on the floor.

➡️ Imagine your anger as energy rising up in your body.

➡️ Begin to stomp your feet rhythmically—slowly at first, then with more intensity.

➡️ With each stomp, say out loud, "I am safe. I can release this."

➡️ Visualize the tension flowing out of your feet and into the ground.

2️⃣ Punch it Out (Empowerment Practice)

➡️ Stand in a strong stance, feet hip-width apart.

➡️ Extend your arms and punch the air in front of you.

➡️ As you punch, exhale deeply and imagine anger leaving your body.

➡️ Repeat: "I am strong. I have the right to express myself."

3️⃣ Dance it Out (Joy Practice)

➡️ Put on an uplifting song that makes you feel powerful.

➡️ Let your body move — swing your arms, shake your hips, or jump around.

➡️ Imagine your body releasing tension and opening space for joy.

Remember: Anger itself isn’t the problem — it’s unexpressed anger that creates tension in your body and mind.
